Becoming an American Heart Association Instructor
Thank you for your interest in becoming an American Heart Association Instructor! Not only will you be able to access to the most current emergency cardiovascular care science, course updates, training resources and tools through the online AHA Instructor Network, but you will be able to provide important, life-saving training to a number of individuals.
BLS instructors - Teach to healthcare professionals (Dr.'s, nurses, EMT's, therapists, dentists, etc.)
Can also teach Heartsaver CPR, First Aid and Blood Borne pathogens classes.
(If planning on teaching to Healthcare and Non-Healthcare groups - must have all BLS and Heartsaver materials as listed below
but only need to take BLS Instructor Essentials Class on-line)
Heartsaver Instructors- teach to non-healthcare professionals, such as coaches, daycare, youth care, DD Providers, etc.
Can teach Heartsaver CPR, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogens classes.
CAN NOT teach BLS classes to Healthcare Professionals.

To become an AHA instructor, you will need to complete the following steps:
- Please call Toni Decklever at 307-426-4007 for a phone interview.
- Complete Instructor Candidate Application and submit to CPR Plus by email - [email protected] or fax - 307-778-3632.
- Have a CURRENT BLS Provider CPR or Heartsaver First Aid/CPR Card. If you need to renew your card, click here for a list of available courses.
- Complete the BLS Instructor Essentials or Heartsaver Instructor Essentials On Line course (Approximately 2 hours). Must have instructor manual to take this course. This must be done before attendance to the classroom training.
- Attend a classroom training. This session will cover the implementation of CPR courses and Training Center paperwork and policies. This is a 7 hour class and is offered on a quarterly basis. Contact CPR Plus through the Contact Us tab for dates.
- Schedule and teach a CPR class that is monitored. The class will be monitored by a Training Center faculty member. This must be done within 6 months of the instructor class. Instructor cards will not be issued until a class is monitored.

Do all students have to have a book? YES
AHA Policy is that each student will own their own textbook. They cannot be libraried.
BLS for Provider Books - 20.00 each. Heartsaver Books - 3.50 each
Do I have to purchase the DVDs or Streaming Program? YES
Use of the DVD or Streaming Program is MANDATORY for classroom instruction.
What equipment will I need?
Teaching a CPR class is equipment extensive. The American Heart Association requires there be at least 1 set of equipment for every 3 students. The following are required for all classes:
How many people can I have in a class?
AHA Policy is a 6 student to 1 instructor ratio. Classes larger than this require a second AHA instructor.
How do I maintain certification?
In order to maintain certification, 4 classes must be taught in a 2 year period, one class is monitored by a Training Center Faculty and attendance at an Instructor Update Class every 2 years is required.

- Baby manikins
- Pocket masks and valves
- AED trainer
- Adult and baby BVM’s (for BLS Provider courses only)
- First Aid Supplies: Gloves, epi-pen trainers, 4x4 gauze, roller gauze, splinting materials.
